BECON MEETING MINUTES

BECON MEETING - February 16, 2005

Status of Multiple PI Initiatives – Activities of the BECON Subcommittee on Team Science and a NIH committee dealing with multiple PI issues were described. Several options for dealing with multiple PI issues have been identified and discussed, and a RFI is pending to obtain input from the scientific community.

DOE/NIBIB Workshop on Biomedical Applications of Nanotechnology – A 1 ½ day workshop on “Biomedical Applications of Nanotechnology” will be sponsored by the DOE and NIBIB on March 17-18 at the Bethesda Hyatt Hotel.

BRP Program Evaluation – An update on an evaluation of the BRP Program using funding from the NIH Office of Evaluation (OE) was provided. The study will be performed by a contractor using the funds obtained from the OE.

2005 BRP Grantee Meeting – For the past four years, annual BRP grantee meetings have been conducted to facilitate communication and information exchange among the grantees and to obtain information for program development and improvement. Discussion was held concerning the need for a grantee meeting in 2005.

Future Role of BECON – Most of the discussion at this meeting was focused on the future role of the BECON. Many issues were addressed and many suggestions were made at the meeting. The information will be collected, distributed to BECON members, and used as the bases for discussion at the March meeting.

Next BECON Meeting - The next BECON meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, March 16, from 3 to 4:30 PM in Room 7111 of the Rockledge 2 Building in Bethesda . A preliminary agenda will be available about a week before the meeting.
