The NIDDK will only accept applications in the following research areas: Imaging/ Modeling Imaging pancreatic beta cell function, mass and transplantation; Novel, non-invasive technologies to detect: the presence or activity of inflammatory conditions of the gastrointestinal tract such as IBD; the presence of metaplasia or dysplasia in Barrett's esophagus or ulcerative colitis; the presence and severity of functional GI disorders such as IBS; and, diagnostic imaging and functional assessment of the kidney and urinary tract; Devices: development of glucose sensors and bioartificial endocrine pancreas;artificial liver support devices; devices for physiological testing of the GI tract (e.g., esophageal motility testing); insertion of nanodevices into red blood cells for diagnostic use; and, devices for improved hemodialysis access. Other: Bioengineering projects to improve pancreatic islet transplantation; new methods (not SQUID or MRI) to detect liver iron; novel, non-invasive technologies to measure hepatic fibrosis or portal pressure; and, improved preservation of tissues for transplantation.
